Out with the Old, In With the New: How to Buy New
Furniture Without Sacrificing Comfort

Furniture buying tips by Joe Daniels

Buying furniture is one of those chores in life that you either love or hate.
When it comes to buying new furniture, many will thrive on it and relish the change and many will realize that in with the new generally means getting rid of the old and quite possibly very comfortable.

But you would never purchase a large ticket item like a cell phone or a new television without doing some preparation first and buying furniture is no different.
As with any major purchase, you need to read reviews and invest some preparation time before selecting your new piece.

The first step in preparing for your furniture purchase is going to be understanding your needs before you buy anything.
Draw up a floor plan of the room where your new piece is going to go and measure everything.  Write all measurements down on your floor plan.

Here is where you are going to create a file of the room you are furnishing.
In this file you want to have pictures of your room, some samples of paint you have used and carpet or fabric swatches from other areas in the room.
Your entire color scheme and proposed layout should be in this file.

A rule of thumb when determining color scheme is that your piece of furniture should closely resemble the pain color on your walls, if not match it completely.
This will create an overall color scheme that your room can follow.
Other pieces you add in the room should complement, and not match your color scheme.

Consider the scale of the room you are furnishing.
Keep it realistic, and write the scale down in your file.

You need to know what scale of your room you are working with.
Be realistic when considering your scale and décor.
The piece you buy will look different in your room than it does on the Internet.

When purchasing furniture from the Internet, you will always be given exact measurements of the pieces you are looking for, so adopt these measurements into the scale of your room as well as to your floor plan.

Determine what the style of your room is going to be before you start looking at selections.
This will save you a lot of time, and you will be able to hone down the various options if you know what kind of piece you are looking for.
Further, the style you create for your room will say a lot about you to your potential houseguests.  The feeling you want to portray to them should be reflected in your choices of furniture.

You need to shop around.
Do not select the first piece that makes your heart beat.
Look around for the best deals, selections and shipping costs.

You may be surprised what some online retailers are willing to offer to get your business.
If you purchase the first thing you see, you may miss out on a real deal.

Lastly, if you have children or pets, you need to take those into consideration.
Many pieces can be scotch guarded these days with industrial strength upholstery protection.
If pets and children are in your life, shop around online for stores that offer this service.
